Amidst a shower of complaints against improper garbage collection and rise in black spots in town, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) on Wednesday unanimously decided to outsource the door-to-door waste collection in 10 wards.
The council has also decided to procure a new truck which will be dedicated to collect waste only from the wards.
MMC Chairperson Priya Mishal informed the council that last time the civic body had outsourced door-to-door waste collection of wards 1 to 10.
“We had received good response about the door-to-door collection which was outsourced to a private agency. Now, we have decided to repeat the experiment and outsource the door-to-door waste collection from wards 11 to 20,” Mishal informed.
She said the outsourcing of the waste collection will be for a period of one year and the funds from 15th Finance Commission will be utilised for the purpose.
Last year, the door-to-door waste collection in segregated form of first 10 wards was outsourced to a private agency and the council has had a good experience of the exercise.
Several councillors said that garbage from black spots and open spaces were not lifted for days together, raising a stink and giving a shabby look in the area.
Councillors Ashirwad Khorjuvenkar and Sainath Raul demanded procuring a truck which will be used to collect waste only from the wards.
“The truck should not be utilised for collection of waste from the market area. It should be dedicated to collect garbage from only the 20 wards,” Raul said.
The council unanimously resolved to purchase a new truck from municipal funds which will be utilised to collect waste material only in the wards.
The chairperson informed that the earlier private agency whom the waste collection was outsourced was given two extensions and some of his payment had to be cleared.
The council later passed a resolution to clear balance payment owed to the agency through the municipal funds.
