The civic authorities in Mapusa have either got their priorities wrong or are numb to people’s concerns.

24 hours after the deluge, the municipal staff were yet to clear the mess created by the incessant rains
on Wednesday.
In many areas in the town, the mud and sludge that was washed down on roads was yet to be cleared till late Thursday evening.
The sludge from the drains stacked by the sides of the roads was yet to be
picked up.
Since it was a sunny day, locals expected the civic authorities to act with a missionary zeal, but it wasn’t
to be.
“We expected the municipal staff to take proactive steps and double up to clear all the roads of the mess created from Wednesday’s rain. This reflects poorly on the leadership of the council,” said Adv Mahesh Rane, a resident of Khorlim-Mapusa.
Simplex Pvt Ltd, responsible for the sewerage work in town, had dug up the main road below the old municipality building but failed to repair the stretch for more than a month.
As a result of Wednesday’s downpour, a huge depression has been formed on the road, inconveniencing motorists and disturbing smooth movement of traffic.
“We have informed the agency concerned to repair the road on top priority. In fact, Simplex officials have started the soling work on the road on Thursday evening,” said Rohan Kavlekar, chairperson, Mapusa Municipal Council.
