A day after a fatal accident at Consua Junction on Friday, Traffic Police were deployed at the accident-prone junction after a joint review meeting and site inspection carried out by Cortalim MLA Anton Vas.
Vas on Saturday morning convened a joint meeting with various government officials, panch members and the local Comunidade body to implement preventive measures at the Consua Junction after a 61-year-old Fransisco D’Silva was killed in a mishap at the junction on Friday morning.
Later speaking to reporters, Vas also said that he has also directed the Traffic Police to act against all heavy vehicles parked along the highway.
“I convened an emergency joint review meeting and also called them to the Consua Junction for a site inspection because a person lost his life in an accident here and preventive measures need to be taken on priority,” said Vas.
“People have demanded a traffic signal here and rumblers or speed breakers at this junction and I will take up this issue of installing a traffic signal at this location with the government.”
Vas said he had also asked the traffic department to deploy traffic police at the Junction.
“But they have told me that this will not be possible throughout the day because they are short of staff. I will now take this with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and request him to provide additional staff to the police and traffic department in my constituency, which is very big and has a sensitive area of Zuarinagar.”
Cortalim Sarpanch Senia Pereira said the panchayat had written to the police to act on containers parked along the highway.
“There had always been a proposal from locals to have traffic signals at this junction because it connects to villages of Nauta and Consua on either sides and people are crossing over in large numbers on a daily basis,” said Pereira.
“The speed limit of the highway is 100 km per hour which makes this location a death trap. We are thankful to the police department for having deployed traffic police at the site. MLA Anton Vas along with the police department has also assured us that speed breakers and Rumblers will be installed here through the PWD department. However, a traffic signal is the need of the hour,” said Pereira.
Have submitted proposal for speed breakers: Traffic PI
VASCO: Vasco Traffic PI Shailesh Narvekar said he has submitted a proposal for rumblers and speed breakers at the Consua Junction.
He also confirmed that the department was facing shortage of staff. “However since MLA Anton Vas requested us, we have deployed traffic police at the location to regulate traffic and help people cross from the highway,” said PI Narvekar.
“We have presently adjusted some of our staff and we will man this junction till some solution is available. Regarding the request for rumblers and speed breakers at this junction, we have already written to competent authorities and we will follow up with the request.”
PI Narvekar said there are several industrial units along the highway between Birla Cross junction to Sada.
“This is why heavy vehicles like trucks, tankers and containers come here. However, since these companies don’t have parking arrangements inside their premises, these vehicles are forced to park along the road.”
“We are regularly issuing challans to these vehicles but we also request the people to drive slowly and follow all traffic rules so that such accidents don’t occur,” he added.
