With a low number of Olive Ridley turtles visiting the nesting sites in Canacona during this current season, the Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (TRC) on Friday received 142 Olive Ridley eggs which were laid at Mobor beach in Salcete.

According to forest (wildlife) sources, an Olive Ridley turtle laid 142 eggs at about 1 am at Mobor beach. Forests officials later shifted the eggs to the TRC Galgibaga Turtle Nesting Site, which has been designated as Pit 2.

The Galgibaga TRC is already protecting Pit 1 with 56 eggs which were laid on the wee hours of January 3.

With the transplanted second pit, the TRC Galgibaga is now protecting a total of 198 olive Ridley eggs.

In a related development, an Olive Ridley turtle visited Agonda’s coast at about 11.52 pm on Friday and laid 121 eggs.

This was the fourth Olive Ridley turtle to arrive arrive at Agonda beach and it laid eggs at a secluded place. Forest Rescuers later shifted the 121 eggs to Pit 4 at the TRC in Agonda.

With the transplanted second pit at TRC Galgibaga and the fourth pit at TRC Agonda, Canacona’s twin protected sites are now protecting a total of 662 Olive Ridley eggs.
