After a long gap, the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) began its full-fledged functioning on Monday with its full bench re-hearing the case of poor food supplied to police personnel who were on ‘bandobast’ (public security) duty during the 2016 BRICS summit which Goa hosted.
The Commission headed by Justice U V Bakre and comprising two former District and Sessions Judges Desmond D’Costa and Pramod Kamat had taken charge just last week and on Monday directed the BRICS food contractor, the Bicholim-based Amoncar Classic Caterers to file a reply.
The GHRC will hear the matter next on Friday.
The Bombay High Court had earlier this month directed the GHRC to hear the 2016 BRICS Summit food case afresh and give a hearing to the contractor Amoncar Classic Caterers, who had approached the High Court claiming that it was not heard by the GHRC.
Lawyer-activist Aires Rodrigues had filed the complaint before the GHRC which in April last year passed the final orders directing the Director General of Police to impose a penalty on the contractor.
Rodrigues had complained in October 2016, that unhygienic food was supplied to police personnel during the 2016 BRICS Summit which infringed Article 21 of the Constitution by violating the human rights of the policemen. The contractor was paid a whopping Rs 51.6 lakh to supply food to the police personnel posted for duty during
the summit.
