Almost three months after the Margao western bypass was commissioned with much fanfare on December 23 last year, the PWD, National Highways finally installed the traffic sign boards at the Belem traffic junction, Navelim indicating that bypass is open for traffic to head towards North Goa.

It took the PWD, NH officials around three months to install the traffic sign boards at the Belem traffic junction since the commissioning of the bypass at the hands of Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on December 23 last.

In the absence of the traffic sign boards, all inter-state north bound traffic coming from Canacona was plying through Navelim village, defeating the very purpose of commissioning of the road bypass.

In fact, the gram sabha of the village panchayat of Navelim had questioned the objective behind the western bypass if heavy traffic continued to ply on the narrow Navelim road, aggravating the traffic problem.

In fact, after the PWD, NH installed the traffic sign board at the Belem traffic junction, the Margao Traffic Cell has posted traffic personnel at the junction to guide and direct all heavy traffic coming from South and heading towards Verna-Panaji to take the bypass road. “The amount of inter-state traffic moving on the Navelim should hopefully reduce now after the installation of the traffic sign boards at the Belem junction. This should have been done by the PWD immediately after the bypass was commissioned by the Chief Minister in December,” remarked a traffic official.
