Taking strong exception to the MPT chairman’s statement that people from outside Vasco were objecting to the projects, while citizens from Vasco had been silent, Almeida said: “I object to statements of MPT chairman I Jeyakumar and want to inform him that though I am from Vasco, I am a Goan first.”
“The coal handling companies have been unable to control the present coal dust pollution and now want to enhance the coal handling activity. I want to tell them to control the present coal dust pollution,” said Almeida.
“I am also against the other two projects, the dredging work and upgradation of berths 7&8 and will take it up with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar,” he said.
“I am with the people of Vasco and Goa at large and will support them in objecting to MPT’s proposed expansion plans,” Almeida added.
In his address, Kavlekar commended the speakers who presented their views objecting to the
expansion plans.
“I will place this issue before the CLP and will adopt a resolution objecting to the proposed expansion plans of MPT. We will send this resolution to our high command so that they can take up the issue in Delhi,”
added Kavlekar.
When asked what had made them attend the public hearing on Tuesday, Cuncolim MLA Clafasio Dias replied: “We were not aware of the hearing and came to know about it only through the media.”
“Though we attended the public hearing on Tuesday, we also object to all three projects of MPT and will support the general public,” said Dias.
Meanwhile, the public hearing on dredging activity, which continued on Tuesday, were met with strong objections from speakers, who sought to debunk the EIA reports prepared by MPT.
