The Agriculture department is likely to visit the fields of farmers in Tiswadi from next week, to assess the actual losses caused to the crops due to the recent floods.
A source inside the department informed The Goan that till date, the department has received over 80 applications from farmers in Tiswadi claiming compensation for loss to crops.
“The Assistant Agricultural Officers (AAOs) are responsible for assessing the loss to the crops and currently, the two AAOs for Tiswadi are not on duty for different reasons. Both are likely to join office only next week, after which the assessment of the losses to crops will begin,” the source said. Asked if the compensation would be paid to farmers before Ganesh Chaturthi as demanded by the farmers, the source informed that two teams will be formed to assess the losses, with one AAO in each team.
“As soon as the AAOs submit reports of losses, the file would be put up for compensation and those whose loss assessment has been done will get compensation.”
