Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has askedofficials to adopt a flexible approach to AI-based traffic enforcement nearschools and churches during peak hours, acknowledging practical difficultiesfaced by families during school drop-offs and religious services.
Godinho said families sometimes resort totriple-riding due to limited public transport during these periods. He saidofficials had been asked to consider the ground situation, including allowingtraffic lights to blink red and green during peak hours, while long-term publictransport solutions are developed.
Speaking at the inauguration of the 15th StateRoad Safety Week at MES College, Zuarinagar, Godinho also announced theexpansion of Goa’s AI traffic surveillance system, with 14 additional sitesexpected to go live within a week. Following deployment at 26 primarylocations, 96 new AI cameras will be installed across the State under a freshPWD agreement.
The cameras will detect speeding, helmetlessriding and seatbelt violations, besides aiding crime detection and real-timesurveillance.
Godinho said AI cameras had helped curbspeeding through home-delivered e-challans, describing the system as a“blessing in disguise”. Responding to suggestions that the rollout be delayeduntil after the elections, he said implementation should proceed immediately,with saving lives taking priority.
