In a major goof-up officials at the Goa Medical College’ mortuary mistakenly disposed the body of 24-year-old Aldona youth Januz Pavel Gonsalves instead of the unclaimed corpse of a 45-year-old Vishant Naik, to the shock of his family.
When Januz’s family reached the GMC to take possession of his body for the funeral slated for Saturday evening, they were shocked to discover that it was missing.
Officials at the Mortuary had apparently handed over the body of Januz, instead of Vishant’s, to the personnel of the CCP who then disposed it along with three others by cremation at the St Inez crematorium.
Instead of a funeral, Januz was then bid the tearful farewell by family and friends who held a ‘memorial service’ at the St Thomas Church in Aldona.
The State government, meanwhile, took a serious note of the goof-up and suspended Dr Edmund Rodrigues, the head of Anatomy Department, and two other staffers -- Machindra Jalmi & Prakash Narvekar -- who were found to be directly responsible for the faux pas following a preliminary enquiry conducted by the GMC Dean.
The health ministry also ordered a probe which will be conducted by the Health Secretary Ashok Kumar, and has also directed the Dean to officially file an FIR with the Agassaim Police against the trio.
Januz who hailed from Goncoi ward of Aldona had collapsed on the football ground earlier this week. He was rushed to the Aldona Health Centre where he was declared ‘brought dead’ and his body sent to the GMC for a post-mortem.
