Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude has called for a revolution on the library front as he made a fervent plea to the panchayat and municipal bodies to provide space to set up modern libraries across the State.
Speaking after inaugurating the municipal library at the Cuncolim Municipal Council, Gaude said he is ready to set up modern libraries in all the 70 village panchayats if the local bodies are willing to provide space.
“Give us space and within no time the government will set up the libraries in all
these 70 panchayats,” Gaude said.
Remembering the sacrifices made by the people of Cuncolim during the freedom struggle which culminated in the Liberation of the State from the Portuguese regime, Gaude said, “Let us all begin another revolution from this place. Let us all take the library movement to the nook and corners of the State,” he said.
He made an offer to the Cuncolim Municipal Council to provide space and assured that the government will set up a state-of-the-art library in the town with quality infrastructure.
In her address, CMC Chairperson Lavita Mascarenhas said the municipal library will go a long way in meeting the requirements of the student community. She thanked Gaude, Cuncolim MLA Clafacio Dias, councillors and the Chief Officer for their efforts to get the municipal library.
Leader of the Opposition Babu Kavlekar, Cuncolim MLA and CMC Vice Chairperson Virendra Desai also spoke.
