In an attempt to do away with the chaos and confusion on the flow of vehicular traffic at the Bastora underpass, Aldona MLA Glenn Ticlo took the initiative to install extra traffic signals near the underpass.

The present traffic signals installed at the site failed to manage and control the flow of traffic through the underpass in Bastora.

Vehicles zigzagging through the service roads created problems for motorists moving towards Moira, Aldona, Ucassaim and villages en route, and similarly for those entering Mapusa town.

When the road over-bridge, which is part of the NH66, was opened to traffic, the highway authorities had fixed four traffic signals to organize the flow of traffic at the underpass.

But over time, the four signals were not enough to control the smooth movement of traffic.

On several occasions, motorists witnessed chaos and confusion due to irregular movement of vehicles at the site.

After learning of the situation, a joint inspection was carried out at the site by the local MLA with Bastora Sarpanch Ranjit Usgaonkar, other panchayat members and Mapusa councillor Franky Carvalho, and a decision was taken to install the extra traffic signals.

The Aldona MLA had requested the PWD (highway) and the contractor to install the extra signals at the site.

But when they failed to do so, the Aldona MLA decided to get the work done on priority through CSR activity.

“Several requests were made to the PWD (highways) that the traffic signals were not sufficient due to heavy flow of traffic. Now, we have installed two more traffic signals in the area through CSR. I am sure the motorists will be more comfortable now,” Ticlo said.

Bastora Sarpanch Ranjit Usgaonkar said the installation of new signals will help to ease the flow of traffic at the underpass.

“We are thankful to the Aldona MLA who has been instrumental in installing the new signals,” Usgaonkar said.
