Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha on Monday gave vent to her anger after preventive measures assured by Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL), which has undertaken work to build the new Zuari Bridge, have not been undertaken at Cortalim.
Saldanha carried out an inspection at Cortalim to ascertain the work done by DBL, as assured to her during the previous joint inspection, to prevent the flow of water and slurry into the houses and fields at Cortalim.
The joint inspection was done in the presence of Cortalim Panchayat Sarpanch, panch members and locals.
Saldanha was extremely unhappy after noticing that none of the remedial measures for monsoon, as assured by DBL, were completed.
DBL had assured that measures would be taken
within a week so that people don’t face hardships, which could include water entering the houses, roads getting flooded, debris getting washed into the fields and slurry flowing around due to ongoing construction taken up by DBL.
“After the last inspection, a pit was supposed to be constructed here, but I don’t see anything. Only on one side sand erosion has been stopped but on the other side there is mud which will
flow in the rains and block
the pits.”
“This road has a slope and water will flow down. The pipe in this pit, which has been cleared, will be blocked again with the mud flowing with water so I am not happy at all and dissatisfied with the works done here. A drain was supposed to be constructed, but there is nothing done here,” said a visibly upset Saldanha.
Local Panch Antonio Rodrigues, who was also present during the inspection, accused DBL of only doing the talking, but not acting on
the assurances.
“Houses in my ward at Pajentar are the most affected. Two three houses have been flooded with slurry and water has also entered their houses. The MLA was assured that all remedial measures would be done in seven days but today not even one measure has been taken,” complained Rodrigues.
“There is no drainage or pipeline. DBL should try and get this done soon. I have personally seen residents cleaning their houses filled with muck and children cannot enter the houses,” he said.
It may be recalled that Saldanha had conducted a joint inspection last week with DBL and government officials, following requests from locals who feared flooding and slurry entering houses and fields.
After the inspection, engineers of DBL had assured to take up all remedial measures in a week’s time.
DBL had assured to build a drainage along the road from the slope up to the field and construction of catchment area/pit on the slope at the cross drain point so that the water flow is controlled to prevent flooding.
DBL had also assured to build a laterite stone wall along the road from Vollant side to stop the water entering the houses lying below the slope as well as along the fields.
DBL officials had also assured to desilt a side drainage along the stretch of the road from the present market place up to the fields at Pazentar and all drains and cross drains along 1st Arvalle road.
