Public Works Department (PWD) Minister, Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar, has said that the state government is aiming to supply 24x7 potable drinking water to entire Goa.
Dhavalikar was speaking at the 50th annual convention of The Indian Water Works Association (IWWA), which is currently happening in Panaji.
Dhavalikar said, “We are developing infrastructure for providing safe, reliable and affordable drinking water to the entire state. I appeal to the public to make judicious use of water. Access to good quantity and quality of water is the right of every citizen of India, whether in rural or urban areas.”
Dhavalikar highlighted that Goa is among top states in India when it comes to supplying filtered tap water to its people. He said, “Almost 95% of people in Goa get filtered tap water.”
The PWD Minister further informed the gathering that Goa government is supplying 130 litres per capita per day water in rural areas and 225-300 litres per capita per day water in urban areas. This is much higher than the central government’s norms concerning water supply.
Dhavalikar appealed to the engineers and delegates present at the gathering to think of ideas to reduce water wastage and improve supply of water to citizens of India.
He said, “In Japan and Singapore, non-revenue-water (NRW) is 5%. Why is it not possible in India? We are working very hard to supply water to every place. Definitely, we can have NRW of upto 20% if not 5%. I feel every engineer at this particular convention should work towards controlling NRW.”
