An altercation over ordering of food turned fatal for a tourist from Andhra Pradesh after he was brutally assaulted at the Marina Shack on Calangute Beach in the wee hours of Tuesday. Four persons, including a beach shack owner, have been arrested in this connection.
SP North Akshat Kaushal informed that the incident occurred around 1 am when a dispute over placing a food order escalated into a violent confrontation.
According to the complaint filed by Spandan Bollu, a resident of Hyderabad, Telangana, the accused attacked Bolla Ravi Teja (28), a resident of Andhra Pradesh, with wooden sticks and physical blows.
“The victim sustained a head injury and later succumbed to his injuries,” the SP said.
According to sources, a group of eight former college friends, which included the deceased Bolla Ravi Teja, and the complainant, Spandan Bollu, had arrived in Goa to welcome the New Year.
The group had gone to the Marina Beach Shack on Calangute beach for dinner on Monday. The shack staff had asked the group to order food early as it was closing time.
Accordingly, the group placed the order. Sometime later, the group wanted to order some more food, but the shack staff said the kitchen was closed.
This led to an argument between the group of tourists and the shack staff, which escalated into a fight. The accused allegedly snatched the mobile phone of one of the tourists, who was filming the assault.
Bolla Ravi Teja was seriously injured after being hit on the head with a stick and fell unconscious in the shack, while other friends also sustained injuries. After that, the shack owner and staff fled the scene.
All the injured were moved to the Candolim Health Centre, where Teja was declared dead by the doctors.
Upon receiving information about the incident, Calangute Police Inspector Paresh Naik and a police team rushed to the spot and conducted a panchnama. North Goa Superintendent Akshat Kaushal and Deputy Superintendent of Police Vishwesh Karpe also visited the spot to take stock of the investigation.
The body has been sent to the GMC hospital for an autopsy and relatives are expected to arrive in the State on Wednesday.
Calangute police later arrested the shack owner Agnel Silveira (64), his son Shubert (23); and two workers Anil Bista (24) and Kamal Sunar (23), both hailing from Nepal and residing in Calangute on charges of murder under Section 103, Section 118 (causing hurt or grievous injuries using dangerous weapons) and 324(3) (committing mischief leading to loss or damage of property) read with Section 3(5) (common intention) of the BNS Act, 2023.
Further investigation is being conducted by Police Inspector Paresh Naik.
