Collecting garbage may be a step towards promoting cleanliness in the coastal village, but the Anjuna-Caisua panchayat has now focused on vehicles collecting the garbage by getting EV garbage collection rickshaws.
The Anjuna panchayat has got six EV rickshaws from entrepreneurs as part of a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative for garbage collection in the village, and plans are afoot to get more of these EV rickshaws.
Briefing media persons, Panch Surendra Govekar said contract labourers used to carry garbage bins after collecting garbage from house to house. “Garbage from these bins would fall on the road and get strewn on the roads, causing stench and inconvenience to residents,” said Surendra Govekar.
“To resolve this problem, Sarpanch Laxmidas Chimulkar at a panchayat body meeting proposed the use of EV rickshaws for garbage collection. The price of this Mahindra EV rickshaw is about Rs 5.5 lakh.”
“The Panchayat later contacted entrepreneurs in the village and appealed to them to provide these EV rickshaws through their CSR schemes. Following support from entrepreneurs, the panchayat decided to purchase six EVs. Five of them have been put to use while the registration process of one EV rickshaw is in progress,” he added.
