SANGUEM
Adv Salom Rodrigues, who appeared on behalf of the farmers, informed that the proceedings are basically filed against the poor farmers to put pressure on them not to agitate.
“It is a way to desist the farmers from resorting to any agitation against the IIT,” said Adv Rodrigues.
“In a democracy, everyone has a right to voice their grievances and in the instant case, the farmers were only voicing their grievance against the IIT at Sanguem as it will have a devastating effect on their farmlands and that some of them tend to lose their agricultural lands,” he said.
He further informed that a total number of nine farmers have been issued with notices of court hearings as of now. While the hearing in the case of three of them was held on Wednesday, the hearing against the other six farmers will be held soon.
Rodrigues informed that the farmers will oppose the proceedings tooth and nail as the cases filed against them are frivolous in nature.
The cases are filed against some farmers as they were opposing the IIT and there is every possibility that they could disturb peace and tranquillity in the area where the proposed IIT is coming up.
A farmer Milton Fernandes accused the government of using police machinery only to threaten the farmers from raising the issue.
“This should not happen in a democracy,” said Fernandes.
