The Aquem area of the commercial capital near the Costa ground witnessed an uproar early Tuesday after local residents caught a villager in the act of disposing of his waste, even as the agitated citizens set a 10-day deadline on the civic body to clear the transfer station or threatened to dump the waste on the main road or in front of the MMC building.
While the villager from neighbouring Aquem-Baixo took his waste back on his two-wheeler, saying that he had come to dispose it of at Aquem since waste was being dumped there, the local residents, including ward councillor Avinash
Shirodkar, sounded a warning to the civic body to act fast or face a stir.
MMC acting Chairperson Tito Cardozo, MMC officials including sanitary inspector Viraj Arabekar were called to the spot to hear the grievances of the residents, who pointed out that the transfer station has become a waste dumping spot for locals and outsiders as well.
A local resident Fatima Dias informed that the local residents used to take a morning walk on the track, but have stopped since the area has become a waste dumping ground.
“The spot emanates foul odour. We cannot even open the windows of our apartments. This is not the place to install a transfer station,” she lamented, while requesting the MMC authorities to act fast before they resort to an agitation.
Councillor Avinash Shirodkar told the acting MMC Chairperson to immediately remove the transfer station or else the residents will be forced to throw the waste on the main road or in front of the MMC building.
“The local residents have to be face the foul odour, nuisance and files for no fault of theirs. Either the transfer station should be removed from the site or the residents will agitate,” Shirodkar warned.
