Architects to discuss environment concerns

Goa, with a wide variety of landscapes in a small cross section is the ideal location to study the evolving risk and concern of buildings on the environment, the Indian Society of Landscape Architects has said.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of a two-day conference for landscaping architects that will focus exclusively on changing climate and evolving landscape, convenor of the conference and chairman of the Goa Chapter of Indian Institute of Architects Manguesh Prabhugaonkar said that several Goa-specific issues including that of hill slopes, tourism related impacts and others will be discussed.
“Goa is changing and the skyline is changing. All this in the presence of a varied environment. In a small area of 110 kilometres we have a cross section of environments right from the coastal environment and CRZ areas to the hill slopes and khazan lands and further to the east the foothills of the Western Ghats,” Prabhugaonkar said.
The conference will see the exploration of the role of landscape architects in addressing the risks of rise in sea level, coastal biodiversity and carbon emissions, flora and fauna, UN sustainable development goals, etc. The conference will see the presence of Peter Head, a champion of sustainable development from the Ecological Sequestration Trust, and several other conservation activists and architects.
The conference will include walks through ecologically and culturally significant areas of Goa such as khazans, the layers of Old Goa, Fontainhas, and narrations on trees and birds of Goa.
