Arossim villagers up in arms against proposed starred hotel

Arossim villagers up in arms against proposed starred hotel

VASCO

Tension prevailed at Arossim village after several villagers gathered to stop the clearance work at a plot where a starred hotel is proposed.

Locals opposing proposed starred hotel at Arossim gathered at the project site after noticing a JCB mowing down trees in the plot.

Villagers alerted the forest department about the activity and a forest team rushed to the site and stopped the work. The forest department also attached the JCB.

Villagers claimed that the plot, where a starred hotel was being planned, was a biodiversity hotspot and they have been opposing the project since 2006.

Speaking to the media, social activist Olencio

Simoes said the land earlier belonged to one company which had in turn sold it to a hotel company.

“The new owners plan to clear the land and claim to have taken permission from the panchayat, but do not have papers to show here.”

“We want to warn the panchayat that if it goes ahead with the project, then the entire village will come on the road and it will be

responsible if there is any law and order problem,” warned Simoes.

Adv Rosh Rodrigues blamed the panchayat for granting permission to the promoters, when the approved file of construction licence was not present in the panchayat.

“That file is in the vigilance department, while a petition is in the NGT and hearings are going on. The panchayat is trying to give backdoor entry to the project in an attempt to frustrate the petition of villagers and NGT.”

“We have requested the project promoters to come for a dialogue to understand the background of the case and why the hotel is being opposed here,” said Rodrigues.

Cansaulim Civic Forum President Alvaro D Costa added: “The new promoters think they can go ahead with the construction, but that will not happen as villagers have already challenged the project in the NGT.”

Cleaning plot for survey work and
boundary wall: hotel representative
VASCO: Claiming that the new owners had recently purchased the property from a company and were cleaning the plot, a representative of the hotel company, who was present at the site, said the company was willing to have a dialogue with the villagers.
“We have just got the land. Today we were cleaning the plot to have a survey to mark location of trees to apply for forest permission and to build a boundary wall for our property,” said the company’s representative. “The case before the NGT is news to us as we were not aware of this. We have informed villagers that we are ready to sit together to discuss and only then go ahead with the construction,” he added.  He claimed that all copies of construction licence and related documents have been provided to people opposing the project under RTI.

Sarpanch refutes charges, says entire p’yat took decision
VASCO: Refuting the allegations, Sarpanch of Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Panchayat Martha Saldanha said she had not granted construction licence in a fraudulent manner.
“I do not know what they are talking about. The previous owners have sold the property to a hotel company which is trying to clear the plot. We had already issued a construction licence to the previous company in October 2017.”
“The people protesting have taken all documents and copies of construction licence from the panchayat through RTI,” said Saldanha.
“There was nothing all this while and now suddenly they are saying the sarpanch has issued licence fraudulently. I want to tell them that I do not take decisions on my own here. The decision was taken by the entire panchayat after consulting all elected panch members.”
