Housing Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar has requested the State government to construct an indoor stadium at Sangolda in an open space near the football ground.

Speaking to reporters after launching the work to construct a retaining wall in Ward 6 at Sangolda in the presence of Sangolda Sarpanch Avinash Naik and panch members, Salgaonkar said the indoor stadium would be proposed on an open space of around 2500 sq. mtrs near the football ground.

“The Sangolda Panchayat has passed a resolution to request the sports department to construct an indoor stadium at Sangolda and the football ground committee has also given its consent for the same,” said Salgaonkar.

“Apart from the football ground, there are no sporting facilities in Sangolda. The indoor stadium has been proposed to offer games like badminton, table tennis and boxing to residents of Sangolda. The foundation stone for this indoor stadium will be laid within the next six months,” said Salgaonkar.

Salgaonkar said the retaining wall was being constructed at a cost of Rs 9 lakh to provide protection to the football ground.

“The road by the side of football ground is narrow and the increase in traffic has led to the need to widen the road. I have proposed widening of the road from Sangolda-Chogm road to Guirim-Pokurlim, as well as the cross road leading to Saligao near Dr Wilfred D’Souza’s house at an estimated cost of Rs 9 crore,” said the minister.

He informed that a new road in Montevilla in Ward 7 would also be constructed at a cost of Rs 13 lakh for the benefit of farmers.

Sangolda Sarpanch Avinash Naik said the panchayat has submitted a proposal for a new panchayat ghar to the government and requested the minister to get it cleared as soon as possible.
