Speaking on the issue of water supply, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the Goa legislative assembly on Friday that his government was committed to bring a system of 24 hours water supply in Goa and listed a number of ongoing projects to collectively augment capacities of the water treatment plants by an additional 130 MLD.
Parrikar was standing in for the ailing PWD Minister Sudin Dhavlikar as he explained that a strategy to simultaneously increase raw water availability, filtering and pumping capacity as well as improving the conveying and distribution pipelines has been adopted to achieve the goal.
Replying to a question tabled by Velim MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Parrikar said Goa had a total capacity of 622 million litres per day (MLD) of which around 560 MLD is supplied and the balance (approximately 12 per cent) is lost in transmission.
Responding to a supplementary question raised by Rodrigues, Parrikar said the interruptions in power supply is affecting water supply, which is also being sorted out by connecting all the water treatment plants with dedicated power cables tapped from main feeder stations.
“For Assonora we have taken a direct cable from Tivim and for Opa from Curti-Ponda,” Parrikar said in response to Rodrigues asking whether erratic power was affecting water supply operations.
Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginald Lourenco, meanwhile, cautioned the government that with largescale housing projects coming up across Goa’s landscape, futuristic planning is paramount to ensuring 24x7 water supply in the State.
“What are the plan to meet these future needs?” was Lourenco’s supplementary query to which Parrikar said projects were ongoing to augment capacity by around
167 MLD.
Opa is being augmented by 27 MLD and Assonora by 30 MLD, Parrikar said, adding that smaller projects to hike capacities in Sal, Chandel, Porvorim and some of the other water treatment plants are ongoing,
To another supplementary from the Velim MLA Filipe Neri Rodrigues, Parrikar agreed that all idle infrastructure like overhead tanks built on heights several decades ago as also main balancing land reservoirs (MBLR) needed to be mapped so that it can be put to use.
The chief minister told Rodrigues and the house that the mapping of these reservoirs and overhead tanks across Goa has already been commissioned to a consultant.

PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Friday said the processes for filtering and treating raw water at all the water treatment plants is full-proof and that each of these plants had in-house laboratories to ensure chlorination, use of Alum to clear suspended dust and the other standard techniques are executed accurately.
Parrikar was responding to a question tabled by Ravi Naik who wanted to know the steps taken to supply clean and pure water in the State and checks are carried out on the high levels of manganese and other pollutants in the treatment plants and the reservoir.
The Chief Minister said each of the treatment plants had their own laboratories and all the processes were being conducted accurately.
