HOMECOMING OF A SCIENTIST: Newly appointed Director of the Vatican Observatory, Fr Richard D’Souza SJ, is felicitated at a special function held at his alma mater, St Britto’s High School, Mapusa.

Newly appointed Director of the Vatican Observatory, Fr Richard D’Souza SJ, returned to his alma mater on Friday with a stirring message for the students of St Britto’s High School – stay curious, ask questions and learn to communicate clearly.
Fr D’Souza, who took charge of the world-renowned research institute earlier this year, was felicitated by the school management and the Britto’s Old Boys’ Association (OBA) during a special programme attended by dignitaries, staff, students and alumni.
Calling curiosity the foundation of scientific discovery, he urged students to cultivate the habit of questioning the world around them.
“Never accept everything that people tell you. Science is about asking the right questions. It’s not about giving the right answers for an exam,” he said, adding that the ability to communicate ideas simply and effectively was as important as scientific brilliance.
“Try explaining things to your friends. The better you can explain, the better you understand,” he said.
Reflecting on the rapid evolution in access to information, he noted how, as a schoolboy in the same halls, he had to depend solely on library books for even small science experiments.
“Today, information is ready for you on your phones. You have immense astronomical data coming from the latest telescopes. Use it,” he said, guiding students to online scientific resources.
Deputy Speaker and Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza described the appointment as a moment of immense pride for Goa and for the school.
“It is a very big deal to have someone from our community, who sat on these same benches in the 90s, leading such a prestigious institution,” he said, adding,
“The next time I visit the Vatican, it is a joy to know someone from Goa represents us there.”
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira said Fr D’Souza’s elevation was an honour not just for Goa but for the wider Catholic community.
Praising his scholarship and humility, Ferreira highlighted the Jesuit scientist’s work in astrophysics and his embodiment of the Ignatian values of excellence and service.
“He reminds us that science and faith are not adversaries but partners in the search for truth,” he said.
The Vatican Observatory, he added, has for centuries symbolised this dialogue.
Calangute MLA Michael Lobo assured that he would pursue formal recognition for Fr D’Souza from the Goa government.
The event saw participation from the Mayor and Commissioner of the Corporation of the City of Panjim, Mapusa Municipal Council members, PTA representatives, staff and alumni.
It was jointly hosted by the St Britto’s management, led by Fr Basil Vago and the Britto’s OBA, headed by president Rohan Nazareth.
