Women and child rights activist Auda Viegas has lodged a complaint with the Maina-Curtotim police to initiate action against the culprits responsible for circulating the photograph of the Quepem rape victim on social media.
Addressing the media, Auda said the identity of the minor victim has been revealed after unknown persons posted certain posts on the social media groups. This is in violation of the Supreme Court guidelines for the media, including social media, she added.
Making a plea to the police to register an FIR against the culprits involved in posting the photograph of the victim girl on social media, the activist has demanded the arrest of the accused persons since the offences are cognizable and non-bailable.
Quoting the Supreme Court guidelines, Auda said the Apex Court has clearly held that no person could print or publish in print name of the victim or even in a remote manner disclose any facts which could lead to the revelation of her identity. “In cases where the victim was dead or of unsound mind, the name or identity could be disclosed after authorization from kin, unless circumstances justifying disclosing of her identity exists, which shall be decided by competent authorites i.e Sessions Judge”, Auda
said quoting the Supreme Court order.
