VASCO
The recent fatal mishap at the flyover in Baina has prompted authorities to move on priority to strengthen road safety measures at the accident-prone stretch, with crash barriers, AI-enabled cameras, rumble strips and blinkers proposed to improve safety for motorists.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar visited the accident site along with NHAI officials, representatives of Gammon India, SP Traffic, the Mamlatdar and police officials to take stock of the situation and discuss measures to prevent similar accidents.
The visit comes against the backdrop of the recent fatal accident on the Baina flyover which left two persons dead, bringing road safety and responsible driving into sharp focus in Mormugao.
Salkar said immediate attention would be given to strengthening safety infrastructure at the flyover, with crash barriers among the measures to be installed on priority. AI-enabled cameras would also be introduced to monitor traffic movement and help identify dangerous driving and speeding.
The installation of rumble strips and blinkers is also planned as part of the safety measures, aimed at alerting motorists and encouraging them to reduce speed while negotiating the stretch.
The MLA said the safety measures were being taken with the objective of preventing accidents and making the road safer for all categories of road users.
The recent series of accidents in the Vasco area has raised concerns over speeding and road-user behaviour, particularly at stretches where motorists tend to pick up speed. While infrastructure and enforcement measures are expected to strengthen road safety, motorists also have a key role to play in preventing accidents.
Salkar appealed to motorists to avoid speeding, follow traffic rules and drive responsibly, stressing that road safety was a shared responsibility.
With the flyover now set to receive additional safety infrastructure, motorists are expected to exercise greater caution while authorities work towards reducing the risk of accidents and making the stretch safer.
