Mormugao Police on Sunday detained the three absconding accused Jumman Shaikh (28), Parshuram Dodamani (25) and Durgappa Madar (28), involved in the brutal murder of 33-year-old Umesh Harijan reported at Baina beach on the afternoon of September 5.
While two accused Amir Hussain and Deepak Sahani had already been arrested under sections 143, 148, 341, 323 and 302 of IPC, besides the arms act, after being handed over by Ponda police who nabbed the duo following a hot chase from Banastari to Old Goa as they were attempting to flee the State after committing the crime, the other three were absconding ever since.
Mormugao PI Raghoba Kamat on Sunday informed that the police team had nabbed the accused from Karanataka.
"We had reliable information that the accused were in Bagalkot and our team moved there, but as it reached, we got information that they are moving towards Belgaum and our team intercepted their movement and apprehended them in Belgaum and they have now been brought to Goa. The two accused arrested earlier were placed under police remand for seven days and will be produced before the court on Monday for further remand. We are presently investigating to ascertain the motive behind the murder," said Kamat.
It may be recalled that Umesh Harijan, who was running a bar, was murdered by a group of five using sharp weapons after he had lunch at a religious place and was moving towards his house. The victim was pronounced dead by the doctors after being rushed to the Chicalim sub-district hospital.
While the family members and friends of the deceased Harijan had demanded justice and a free and fair probe, Mormugao DySP Rajesh Kumar had said that the motive of the crime appeared to be the previous enmity.
"While initial reports had suggested that there were four involved in the crime, the investigation has revealed that another accused was also involved taking the number of accused to a tally of five involved in the murder."
"We have arrested two accused Amir Hussain and Deepak Sahani, and they have been granted seven days of police custody. We have found two sharp weapons on the site and will get to know more details of the exact number of weapons used upon further investigation," Kumar had said.
"The post-mortem was conducted on the victim and the cause of death is due to lung injury caused by stabbing," Kumar had said.
