The SGPDA parking lot has turned into an eyesore with the baled plastic and dry waste piling up and awaiting transportation by the authorities.
Sunday shoppers at the SGPDA retail market were greeted by a mound of waste, including baled plastic and dry waste in the parking lot. Visitors as well as the retail vendors complained that the mound has posed a nuisance, more so since the baling project is being set up adjoining the Sulabh toilet block in the parking lot.
When 'The Goan' Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar was contacted to find out the status of the waste lying in the market, he was quick to point out that the MMC had baled the plastic and dry waste, but the authorities are yet to lift the waste.
“The MMC had started baling of the plastic and dry waste at the SGPDA parking lot. However, the baled plastic has not been lifted away and we are told that the delay was on account of certain issues raised by the cement factories in neighbouring Karnataka”, Arabekar said, while adding that the MMC will pursue the matter with the Goa Waste Management Corporation.
Ever since the SGPDA had issued NOC to the Margao Municipal to bale plastic and dry waste generated in the retail market, the parking lot has become an eyesore and nuisance for the vendors and visitors.
In fact, plastic and dry waste was lying unattended in the SGPDA parking lot for a long time a couple of months ago for want a shed to start the baling exercise.
Following complaints lodged by the about the nuisance created in the market by the waste dumping, even the SGPDA was toying with the idea of setting up its own garbage treatment plant in the retail market by roping in private players.
