Baled waste dumped at old fish market spills onto the road

MARGAO

Baled dry and plastic waste dumped at the old fish market area just behind the Margao municipal building gave way and spilt over the road on Tuesday.

The old fish market area behind the MMC building was being used by the civic body to bale dry and plastic waste, more so after the baling machines at Sonsodo were gutted in the major fire in March last.

MMC officials pointed out that though baling of dry and plastic waste has resumed at Sonsodo, the baled waste continued to be stored at the old fish market, which spilt over the road due to the heavy downpour.

The old fish market had become an eyesore over the last few months with the MMC carrying out baling of dry waste at the site. Though the activity had invited strong objections from the citizens as well as the business community, the MMC paid scant respect to the sentiments as evident by the fact that the mound of baled waste lay uncovered in a place bustling with activity and movement of traffic and pedestrians.
