As the struggle to dispose of dry and wet waste in the commercial capital continues, the Margao Municipal Council is scouting for prospective parties to lease out sheds to house the dry waste baling machines to bale the waste and transport the same to neighbouring
Karnataka.
That’s not all. The MMC is also writing to the KTC management with a plea to spare some space in its property to set up a temporary baling machine to take care of the
dry waste.
These are some of the measures contemplated by the civic body to cap the dry waste problem as space constraint has affected the baling and disposal of the tons of dry waste collected in the city.
With the civic body running short of space at Sonsodo to even set up a baling machine and attempts to take on lease sheds at the Nessai industrial estate to install the baling machines coming a cropper, the Margao Municipality has decided to insert public notice inviting prospective citizens to lease out their premises to the civic body to set up the baling machines.
“Unless the MMC gets the space or the readymade sheds to install the baling machines, our efforts to dispose of the dry waste will all go in vain,” an official told The Goan.
While the MMC has zeroed in on the old fish market area, which is now proposed to be developed into multi-level parking lot, to set up a baling machine till the parking lot takes shape, the civic body is seriously looking out for areas and sheds to set up the baling machines.
Tons of dry waste is piling up at the Sonsodo site and elsewhere across the city with the baling of dry waste going haywire for want of space as well as because of the recent rainfall. If sources are to be believed, hundreds, if not thousands of polythene bags stacked with dry waste have piled up at Sonsodo for want of baling, with officials saying in private that the civic body is heading for a big time trouble if it fails to get space for baling of dry waste.
The MMC is looking out for space admeasuring 500 square metres, enough to set up a baling machine to bale the waste before the same is transported to the cement factories in Karnataka.
Meanwhile, MMC’s woes on the disposal of wet garbage seemed far from over. With open dumping barred at the Sonsodo site by the High Court, the civic body has been struggling to segregate the wet and mixed waste dumped at the black spots.
While the MMC had roped in a private contractor in a bid to engage 90 labourers as a stop gap arrangement to meet the situation, sources said the labour contractor is believed to have managed to get only around 30 workers till date.
With the intervening Diwali holidays and the fact that the migrant labourers have headed to their native state, the MMC is now keeping its fingers crossed, hoping that the labourers will report at the civic body only after the festivities.
