District Collector, Swapnil Naik told The Goan that he had issued an order banning the import of chicken birds into the district from Karnataka after the department of Animal Husbandry moved a proposal following the reported detection of a bird flu in that state. “My office had acted in issuing the ban order on Wednesday following a proposal moved by the department of Animal husbandry. The order was precautionary in nature and was issued as a matter of abundant caution”, Swapnil told The Goan on Sunday.
When The Goan called up the Director of Animal Husbandry, Santosh Desai, he said the proposal was moved to the district collector, South after receiving a report from the Western laboratory, Pune on the reported detection of a bird flu case in Karnataka. “We are closely monitoring the situation though no cases have been brought to our notice till date”, Desai said.
Meanwhile, chicken stalls at the SGPDA retail market did business as usual despite the ban order since most of the vendors received their requirements from neighbouring Maharashtra. “Neither the supply of live birds and broilers has been affected nor the price has gone up after the ban. The ban order had no impact on the vendors in the SGPDA market since our requirements are met from neighbouring Maharashtra”, informed Timothy Texeira.
