In a representation to Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, President of the NGO, Irish Passanha urged the government to look into the loss of revenue sustained by these traditional fishermen and other local business owners on account of the BRICS summit.
The petition reminded the government that thousands of locals dependent on the fishing business have been deprived of their daily livelihood for the last seven days because of the ban on fishing.
Irish has quoted a circular issued by the Director of Fisheries to the 12 fishing associations and co-operative societies directing the fishermen of the State that all fishing activities from Grande Island to Betul up to five nautical miles from the coast have been prohibited for the period from
October 10-17.
“The Fisheries director had directed the fishermen not to venture into the sea for fishing by any means and any violation would be viewed seriously,” he said, adding that the fishermen has lost huge income during the last seven days and need to be adequately compensated for the losses.
