MARGAO: Nationalist Congress Party leader Churchill Alemao on Wednesday appreciated the stand taken by the Manohar Parrikar-led coalition government to ban the import of fish into Goa from outside the state.
The Benaulim MLA, however, hastened to reiterate his demand that Goa’s wholesale fish market should be liberated from the control of outside fish agents. “I appreciate the decision of the government to ban the import of outside fish into the state. The health and safety of the lives of Goans cannot be put to risk,” he said.
Churchill, however, pointed out that the government should initiate appropriate steps to ensure that Goans gain entry into the wholesale fish business. “The wholesale fish market is being controlled by the outside fish agents. There’s no place for Goans who want to do business in the market,” Churchill said, adding that the government should free the wholesale fish market from the clutches of outside fish agents.
