BICHOLIM
Locals of Mayem voted in favour of a resolution to oppose additional liquor bars in the village. The issue came up for discussion at the Mayem gram sabha on Sunday, which was chaired by Sarpanch Vijay Pole.
The locals voiced their opposition to new liquor bars and also demanded that illegal bars in the village be
shut down.
While some youth were in favour of permission to new bars, the Bharat Swabhimaan (Mayem) President Kamlakant Tari strongly objected to their demands and insisted that they would never support any permission to more liquor bars in the village.
Ex-sarpanch Sakharam Pednekar endorsed the views of Tari and said there were already 60 bars in Mayem village, of which 21 of them were operating illegally. Pednekar insisted that attempts to allow more bars in Mayem would amount to destroying people and their families.
As the discussions became heated, the locals demanded a vote to decide the issue and a secret ballot was conducted at the Gram Sabha. While 30 voted in favour of a resolution to oppose additional liquor bars in the village, only nine voted against the resolution.
Those who supported the resolution to oppose additional liquor bars in the village included the sarpanch Vijay Kulpati and Sandeep Mainkar, who are members of
Bharat Swabhimaan.
