PANAJI: Ammunition could soon be manufactured in Goa, with a Bangalore-based company seeking approval to set up the first such ammunition manufacturing facility in the State.
The proposal of Hughes Precision Manufacturing Pvt Ltd, Bangalore, which is likely to be discussed for grant of in-principle approval at the Investment Promotion Board (IPB) meeting on October 17, has sought 8,000 sq mts of land in any industrial area in the State.
Incidentally, the project proposal had been initially submitted to the IPB's consultant for an evaluation and in its Investment Proposal Evaluation Report, the consultant is reported to have recommended granting in-principle approval to the Rs 41 crore project.
The IPB had also sought the comments of the board's sub-committee on the proposal.
“The sub-committee was of the view that the unit is geared towards exports and could attract local business establishments to pursue defence related projects,” said a source at the IPB.
According to the source, the project proposal indicates that the built up area of the project would be about 2,500 sq mts and a firing range of about 120 metres long.
“Though the company has sought about 8,000 sq mtrs of land, the IPB's sub-committee has recommended that the investors consider an area of about 4000-5000 sq. mtrs,” the source said.
The company is expected to employ about 70 people at the facility.
When the project came up for discussion at the 20th board meeting on July 14, the IPB had recommended that the area and local for the project would be finalised only after the company obtained required approvals from the union home ministry and defence ministry.
“The company has obtained the required approvals from the central government and has submitted these approvals to the IPB. With these approvals in place, the IPB will now deliberate on the area and site of the proposed project,” the source added.
