The Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has directed a written public apology and voluntary service at special schools from a Canara Bank manager after finding him guilty of humiliating a customer with a disability. This incident occurred at the bank’s Porvorim branch, where the father of a person with a disability was allegedly subjected to humiliation and discrimination.

In the order pronounced on July 24, Commissioner Guruprasad Pawaskar expressed utter disappointment over the incident and issued directives to the now-incumbent bank manager to display a public apology within the bank premises and volunteer at special schools to foster empathy, understanding and respect for persons with disabilities (PwDs). The bank is also asked to submit a compliance report within three months.

The Commission has also directed to incorporate sensitivity and awareness training for all bank employees within six months in collaboration with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), to equip the bank staff to prevent future incidents and create a more inclusive banking environment.

“The rights and dignity of persons with disabilities are non-negotiable and every individual must uphold these values. This order goes beyond addressing the immediate incident. It emphasizes the critical need to create inclusive environments where individuals with disabilities and their caregivers are treated with respect and dignity,” Pawaskar stated.

By addressing the complainant’s experience and taking proactive measures to prevent future incidents, this order contributes to building a more equitable and compassionate society. It seeks to redress the humiliation and discrimination faced by the complainant. Together, we are taking a significant step toward a society where the rights and dignity of every individual are upheld.”
