The feast of Divine Mercy was celebrated at the Carmelite Monastery, Aquem-Margao on Sunday with religious fervour, even as Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao exhorted the faithful to be instruments of mercy in a society that is riddled with strife, wars, injustice and crime.

Devotees from across South Goa gathered at the Carmelite Monastery to celebrate the feast on Sunday evening. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao was the main celebrant of the Eucharistic celebration.

In his homily, the Archbishop reminded the faithful that though the feast of divine mercy is being celebrated by the Church on the second Sunday after Easter every year, the feast has a special significance this year with Pope Francis declaring the year as the year of Mercy.

“In his letter to churches across the world, Pope Francis has said that Jesus is the shining face of the Father’s mercy. This God’s mercy was witnessed in the life of Jesus. We all should now become witnesses of God’s mercy,” the Archbishop said.

The Divine Mercy Chapel was blessed after the Eucharistic celebration. Two senior Carmelite friars who celebrate their Golden Jubilee of religious profession, namely Fr. Patrick Lobo and Fr. Walter Lobo, were felicitated.

Carmelite Monastery being a centre well-known for the Sacrament of confession and counselling, throughout the year, is being officially recognised as the centre of Divine Mercy in the Archdiocese.
