Tourists urged to follow swim zone rules and heat precautions

With temperatures rising across Goa during the peak summer season, Drishti Marine, the state-appointed professional lifesaving agency, has issued a public advisory urging beachgoers to follow basic safety measures while visiting the coast.
The advisory comes as a surge of domestic tourists, many travelling with families, arrive in Goa for their annual summer holidays. Several popular beaches have been demarcated with designated swim zones to ensure safer access to the sea. Summer temperatures in the state typically range between 27°C and 35°C.
Drishti Marine has advised visitors to swim only between red and yellow flags, which indicate relatively safe conditions, and to strictly avoid areas marked with red flags, as these are unsafe due to strong currents. Beachgoers are also encouraged to stay hydrated, use sunscreen, and seek shade under umbrellas to avoid sunburn and heatstroke.
Highlighting potential dangers, the agency warned of rip currents and underwater currents, which can pose serious risks even in seemingly calm waters.
“The intense heat can lead to sunburn and heatstroke. It is important to stay hydrated and avoid direct sunlight between 12 noon and 3 pm,” said CEO Navin Awasthi.
Drishti Marine has deployed over 450 trained lifesavers across 54 beaches, along with inland tourist spots such as waterfalls and lakes. More than 100 swim zones have been created along the coastline to enhance safety.
Lifesavers conduct daily assessments of sea conditions to identify safe areas. Tourists are urged to follow instructions, avoid swimming alone or under the influence of alcohol, and seek immediate help from lifesavers in case of emergencies.
Authorities also stressed the importance of keeping a close watch on children, maintaining distance from the waterline when advised, and not attempting rescues without proper training or supervision.
