In an attempt to curb nuisance created by beggars and hawkers across the Calangute-Sinquerim coastal belt, several beggars and hawkers were rounded up by the police on Tuesday afternoon.

Eight beggars and nine hawkers were detained by the Calangute Police at around 2.30 pm. They were produced before a Mapusa Court and later released after paying a fine.

The beggars were arrested under Section 4 (1) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Prevention of Beggar Act and the hawkers under the Section 34 (4) of the IP Act, Calangute Police informed.

There were produced before the JMFC Court, Mapusa, and were later released after payment of a fine.

“The Calangute Panchayat had recently sent a note to the Calangute Police about the nuisance created by the beggars and the migrants in the village,” said Calangute Deputy Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira.

It may be recalled that on the request of the gram sabha, the Calangute Panchayat had resolved to drive away migrants and beggars from the village and also formed a committee of locals with deputy sarpanch Joseph Sequeira as the chairman of the committee.

The decision to take action on migrants and beggars came after a group of concerned Calangute citizens put up a proposal before the panchayat to take action on the labour class, who have been bringing a bad name to the village.

Sequiera said the proposal was a wake-up call and that the panchayat backed the citizens’ call to free the village from the migrants and beggars.
