Christmas, the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, was celebrated all over Belegavi diocese late Saturday night.

The celebrations commenced with special prayer services that commenced around midnight on Saturday, ushering in week-long celebrations that will continue till the New Year.

Special midnight Eucharistic services were offered in Our Lady of Fatima Cathedral, Immaculate Conception Church and all the churches in and around the city.

In his Christmas message, Bishop Peter Machado urged the faithful not to forget the poor and include them in their celebrations.

“Just as light dispels darkness, the birth of Jesus heralds the defeat of the forces of evil,” Bishop Machado said, adding that Christmas is also a feast of joy and sharing, especially among the poor.

“Baby Jesus who was born in a stable is the best projection of his preferential option for the poor. Hence, any effort to celebrate Christmas without including the poor will sound empty and meaningless,” Bishop Machado emphasised.

Meanwhile, the day-long celebrations include extending of the traditional Merry Christmas and exchange of sweets. Special programmes including celebration of Christmas for the poor, marginalised children and senior citizens will be observed in the premises of all the churches in the city. Various competitions would be also held throughout the week.
