With the district administration gearing up for bypolls in Gokak, Athani and Kagwad, authorities have increased vigilance against Goa liquor being transported in the district.
Belagavi police seized a huge stock of Goa-made liquor illicitly being transported via Belagavi to an unknown destination. Two persons have been arrested in this
regard.
Acting on a tip off, the police team under the direction of Police Commissioner B S Lokeshkumar, DCP Seema Latkar and ACP N V barman, CPI Sangmesh Shivayogi intercepted a Goa-Hyderabad private bus (PY-04-A-2467) near Triveni Hotel here on Tuesday afternoon and found huge stock of Goa-made whisky, rum etc worth Rs 1,30,700.
The bus driver N D Mehboob and cleaner K Bhanu Sudhakar, both from Hyderabad, were arrested in this connection.
“We suspect a strong nexus operating between drug and liquor peddlers between Goa and Hyderabad. Despite maintaining stringent vigil, we are also investigating the matter. We suspect that the arrested duo is engaged in this type of liquor racket since a long time and the facts would be established after investigation,” CPI Shivayogi told The Goan.
Shahapur PI Raghavendra Hawaldar and PSI G N Gawaji were part of the investigation and raiding team.
A case has been registered at Market police station.
