Bishop of Belgaum Derek Fernandes has said that the book ‘Churches of Goa “ Volume 1’, brought out by The Goan, is a valuable contribution to preserving and appreciating Goa’s rich church heritage.

“This first volume is a commendable effort. It does not just document historic buildings, but highlights living symbols of faith that have shaped Goa’s spiritual and cultural life over centuries,” said Bishop Fernandes.

He described the book as both an architectural and cultural treasure.

“Many churches in Goa, influenced by Portuguese styles, show a fine blend of European design and local craftsmanship. Through clear descriptions, the author, Fr Apolinario Cardozo SJ, brings out the beauty of these sacred spaces”their facades, layout, and design”each reflecting devotion and artistic excellence.”

The bishop added that the book also helps readers see how architecture can inspire faith and lift the mind towards God.

He said the book goes beyond architecture by presenting churches as centres of living faith. “They stand as witnesses to the beliefs of Goan Catholics across generations”from early missionaries to thriving parish communities.”

Calling the work both scholarly and accessible, Bishop Fernandes said it is a valuable addition to Goan history and a meaningful resource for all readers.

“This book is more than a record”it is a journey through faith, history, and beauty,” he added.
