Benaulim, Sernabatim coast hit by sand erosion

MARGAO
Sand erosion raised its ugly head along the Benaulim and Sernabatim coast in the last 2-3 days, with a significant portion of the coast eroded by rising sea waters.

Benaulim fishermen pointed out that the sea has been rough in the last two days, with the coast battered by huge waves. The situation was no better on Sunday noon at around 2.30 pm when the sea water rose dangerously, eroding the beach.

Fisherman Pele Fernandes has said the sea has been rough in the last 2-3 days. The sea water has touched the land mass along the coast, eroding the beach.

At neighbouring Sernabatim, activists called on the South Goa district disaster management cell on Saturday evening to complain of the beach getting eroded because of problems near the creek.

The world famous Colva beach had faced the brunt of sand erosion this monsoons after the creek waters changed its course to the northern directions instead of entering the sea. Before further damage to the coast could be done, the departments deployed heavy machinery on the beach to excavate the sand bar and pave way for the creek waters to enter the sea.
