Admitting that power supply had not been up to expectations in Agonda even though the beach has been consistently rated as one of the world’s most popular beaches, Deputy Speaker and Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes on Tuesday said transformers and underground cabling will now be installed to boost power infrastructure at the world-famous beach.

Fernandes was speaking at the launch of six new transformers at a cost of Rs 61.32 lakh in Mudkud, Karashir-Moll, Mirandawada, Vall-Aframent, Dhavalkhazan and Betul ward.

Speaking further Fernandes said, “Due to low voltage, locals and tourists had been suffering and some tourists had even decided not to return to Agonda. With the new transformers and underground cabling, power supply will certainly improve in Agonda.”

Fernandes also informed that roadworks, erection of crash barriers and construction of the Dhavalkhazan bridge would start soon in Agonda.

Agonda Sarpanch Badal Naikgaunkar claimed that while the panchayat had received support from most people, there were a few people in some parts of the village who were unnecessarily objecting to developments.

“This hampers development works in the village,” he said.

Others present at the launch of the works included Electricity Assistant Engineer Sanjay Gaonkar, Junior engineers and other staff, ex-sarpanch and Panch Barsat Naikgaunkar, Panch Tippu Pagi and social worker Nilesh Pagi.
