Affected locals of Bhoma and Corlim have reiterated their opposition to the expansion of the road as they said a highway road cannot pass through villages.
The locals were speaking to reporters on Tuesday, after their unsuccessful meeting with the Special Land Acquisition officer at his office in Altinho.
Speaking to reporters, a Bhoma local Sanjay Naik said this project was opposed by the current BJP leaders when they were in opposition.
“That time, they told us that a highway cannot pass through villages and also chalked out an alternate bypass road which was suggested by former chief minister late Manohar Parrikar to solve the issue,” Naik said and questioned how these very leaders have changed their stance after coming to power.
Naik said the demand of the locals is very clear that an alternate bypass road as planned by the BJP when in opposition should be built to resolve the issue.
He further opposed the proposal that a flyover would be built as he said it will still not solve the problem of damage to the centuries-old houses of the locals.
A Corlim local, Edwin D’Sa, informed that on two earlier occasions, they had to come on the streets to fight against the road expansion plan.
“And we achieved success the second time around in 2016, when the PWD wrote to us stating that the project has been dropped. Now, suddenly they have restarted the process of highway expansion,” D’Sa said and informed that their opposition to the project will continue.
Meanwhile, the locals expressed anguish over the Land Acquisition Officer not entertaining their demand of showing the actual plan of the project.
They further alleged that the locals are being shown one plan while the highway authorities have prepared another plan.
The locals are firm in their demand that a bypass road be built from Kundaim to connect to the Kadamba road where there will be no need to demolish a single house.
