Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye, a Zilla Panchayat member, and three local residents were injured after a swarm of bees attacked them during a foundation stone ceremony for a transformer at Bhatwadi-Latambarcem on Friday.

Dr Shetye said the ceremony was in progress when bees from a nearby hive suddenly attacked people at the venue.

“Five people were stung, and I suffered a minor injury near my eye,” he said.

The incident caused panic, with Dr Shetye, ZP member Padmakar Mali and others rushing away as the swarm grew. The injured were taken to the Bicholim Community Health Centre, while one person was shifted to a private hospital for further treatment. Mali said all are now in stable condition.

The situation remained tense for some time, but locals quickly stepped in to help and ensured the injured received medical care.
