Goa recorded 189 Covid-19 cases over the 24-hour period between the evening of Wednesday and Thursday, raising concern among the State’s response team and forcing the government to revisit the decision of holding the Holi celebrations.
It was the highest single-day tally of Covid-positive cases over the last three months with 2,190 samples tested for the dreaded virus.
According to the Directorate of Health Services daily bulletin, there was one fatality taking Goa’s Covid-19 death toll to 822. The DHS also said that 66 people have recovered and the count of active cases stood at 1,278, most of which were from the capital city of Panaji (163), which recently went to polls to elect city fathers for CCP.
Even as cases were rising, the State government was dithering on the question of imposing travel restrictions fearing another adverse impact on tourism which is limping back to near normalcy.
Earlier this week, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane had indicated that the government could impose restrictions including mandating a Covid-19 negative test for people entering the State but the move fizzled out after Waste Management Minister Michael Lobo raised fears of an economic backlash.
