MARGAO
Reason: Kamat was of the firm opinion that the decision to store these records at the Archives had put the common man from far flung talukas and villages to great hardships; they had to travel all the way to Panaji just to lay their hands on birth or death documents.
Exactly 10 years down the line, a similar question may come to haunt the incumbent Manohar Parrikar-led government. For, the State Registrar has told the taluka Sub Registrars to brace up to dispatch the birth and death documents from 1914 to 1970 to the Archives anytime from now.
In fact, following a circular sent by the State Registrar, the taluka Sub Registrars have begun the process of listing the record books to facilitate the Archives to take possession of the books any moment.
That the Sub Registrars are in the process of listing the books to send the documents to the Archives became evident when citizens from Salcete came to the taluka office on Tuesday, only to be told by the officials that all births and death records will be sent to the Archives anytime from now.
