The Vasco BJP Mandal’s proposed agitation with hundreds of youth outside Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) demanding jobs for locals was called off on Thursday after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant intervened and assured to take up the issue of jobs to locals with the GSL management
Speaking to reporters, Vasco BJP Mandal President Deepak Naik said GSL is one of the most successful government organisations in Vasco.
"We noticed that there are around 400-500 vacancies coming up in GSL regularly, but despite so many unemployed youth in Vasco, maximum jobs are given to outsiders and there is no benefit for Vascokars,” said Naik.
“We had planned an agitation with over 500 youth but we decided to cancel the agitation after CM Pramod Sawant intervened and assured us to take up issue of jobs to locals with the GSL management," said Naik.
"We have been quiet all these years but will not take this lightly if the GSL sidelines Vascokars. I was present when former Defence Minister late Manohar Parrikar personally told the GSL CMD to keep a quota of 20 per cent for Vascokars, but this has never materialised.”
“We have seen how jobs are offered to locals in the mining belt and how Konkan Railway accommodated people who had lost their fields while laying tracks. Why do we need GSL if we have to suffer here and not get any benefits," asked Naik.
Naik said the jobs should be given to Goans and those born in Goa or having a residence certificate of over 15 years on top priority.
“Otherwise, they must remove the word ‘Goa’ from GSL if they want to engage people from Andhra, Karnataka, Bihar and other States. If this does not happen, we will take our next step and carry out a massive agitation and even take to Rasta Roko and stop their works," warned Naik.
