BJP accuses Congress of double standard over Jharkhand student protests

The BJP has hit out at Congress for having adopted “double standards” over the ongoing protests in Jharkhand.

Addressing a press conference at party headquarters on Tuesday, Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho questioned the opposition party’s response to reports of students being subjected to police action during demonstrations.

“The Congress criticised the BJP-led government at the Centre over the handling of protests, but it has remained silent over the reported use of tear gas and lathi charges against protesting students in Jharkhand. Is it quiet because the party is part of the ruling alliance?” he said, taking a dig at the Congress.

He further said the BJP government had engaged with Gen Z protesters and responded to their demands, which is in contrast with the situation in Jharkhand. Godinho also said the BJP-led Central government was prepared to discuss the matter in Parliament if the Congress wanted a debate on the issue.

“Rahul Gandhi should come forward and resolve the issue with his alliance government in Jharkhand,” he suggested.

The minister also criticised the Congress for participating in protests at Jantar Mantar demanding resignations and for repeatedly disrupting parliamentary proceedings. He alleged that the party had not adopted the same position over the Jharkhand protests.

“We demand that Rahul Gandhi apologise to Parliament and the people of India for this double standard,” Godinho said.
