The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa is currently focused on conducting its primary membership drive, which will set the stage for the election of the party's new state president, slated for early 2025.

This was announced by State BJP President Sadanand Tanavade, who explained that the process would culminate in January next year.

Tanavade, whose three-year term as State President was extended last year due to the Lok Sabha elections, highlighted that the party’s constitution allows for a sitting president to contest for a second term.

However, he noted that the BJP typically prefers to elect a new face to ensure broader representation within the party.

“As per the party’s constitution, every six years all of us have to renew our party membership. So, for now, the party will be busy in enrolling maximum primary members, which will be followed by electing heads to key positions. The entire process will finally lead to the election of the State President, which will take another four months,” Tanavade stated.

This membership renewal process is part of a nationwide exercise that will ultimately lead to the election of a new national BJP President.

Tanavade mentioned that although there is an option for a State President to seek re-election, the party generally favours giving a new leader the opportunity to lead.

“We normally don’t have a contest for the top post. It is usually a unanimous decision after taking everyone into confidence,” Tanavade added, underscoring the party’s collective approach to leadership selection.

The process of electing the new State President will unfold over the coming months, with the final election expected to take place by January 2025.

This initiative marks a significant phase in the party’s organisational activities, aligning with its broader strategy at both the state and national levels.
